I would say go see him, as well as any other players that come to your area... then you can mix and match ideas, uniquely classify them as your own!
I just saw Thomas Lang (great clinic for speed and endurance) and I got a bunch of ideas for practicing rudimental stuff between all four limbs. (Not that I can do it all though)

Of course I and some of us others on this forum are no Jimbo, Lang, Acuna, Colaiuta, but who knows, someday with all the tips from vids/in person we get from other players? we might get asked to do a gig for em?! Only time(and lots of practice) will tell! [img]graemlins/thinking.gif[/img] Ha

I saw Akira in clinic here last month...it was great...a lot of fun!!! He's a pretty impressive player...especially the way he combines all of the acoustic and electronic percussion...he basically plays a whole bunch of tunes, but there are no backing tracks....everything is live!!! He uses all of the electronics to play the melodies of tunes and to play loops and stuff, and then he plays the drumming parts on the acoustic kit simultaneously....it's pretty cool to watch...and he's a really nice and funny guy aswell...definitely go watch him!!!

Not only is he pushing the acoustic/electronic setup to the limits, but he is a hell of a player too. Grooves, speed that's hard to match and always a smile. Let us know what you think!

We've had him clinic and it's very interesting to see his take on a one man band. His clinic isn't particulary educational though. Partly do to language difficulties and the nature of what he does. It is definitely concept expanding and I think his left foot simultaneous clave cascara patterns are amazing.

Just want to add my vote to go see him!

I was at the Akira clinic in Chicago and thought it was great. Yes, the language barrier might have diluted the informative aspect a bit, but I still learned quite a bit. I have been to several clinics that were of almost no educational value.

It was very inspirational just to hear him play, regardless of the one-man band concept. He's got good chops, but also good feel and a good sound. While I really dig the current chops-masters (Virgil, Marco, Lang, Mangini, etc.) I usually find their groove to be a little "cold."
